Background of the study
Funding constraints have long been a significant challenge for healthcare institutions worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Nigeria. Inadequate funding for healthcare facilities impedes the ability to expand hospital services, maintain infrastructure, and provide high-quality care (Sulaimon et al., 2023). In Plateau State, public hospitals are particularly affected by limited financial resources, resulting in overcrowded facilities, outdated medical equipment, and an inability to meet the growing healthcare needs of the population (Ogunyemi & Ibrahim, 2024).

The lack of funds hinders the ability of hospitals to expand their physical infrastructure, recruit sufficient medical staff, and purchase essential medical supplies (Yusuf et al., 2025). Additionally, the underfunding of public healthcare institutions has resulted in the reliance on external aid and government grants, which may be irregular and insufficient to address the long-term needs of hospitals (Aliyu et al., 2023). This has led to challenges in meeting the increasing demand for healthcare services in Plateau State, where the population is growing and the burden of diseases is escalating.

Despite the critical role of funding in the expansion and development of healthcare facilities, little research has been conducted on the specific effects of funding constraints on hospital expansion in Plateau State. This study seeks to analyze how funding limitations impact the ability of healthcare institutions in the state to expand and improve their facilities to meet the needs of the population.

Statement of the problem
Healthcare institutions in Plateau State are facing significant funding constraints that limit their capacity to expand and improve their facilities. These constraints have resulted in inadequate infrastructure, shortages of medical supplies, and insufficient personnel to meet the growing demand for healthcare services (Adeniran & Salihu, 2024). As a result, hospitals are unable to provide timely, quality care, which has significant implications for patient outcomes. Despite the recognition of these challenges, there is limited research on the specific effects of funding constraints on the expansion of hospital facilities in Plateau State. This study seeks to address this gap by exploring how funding issues affect the growth and development of healthcare institutions in the state.

Objectives of the study

  1. To examine the effect of funding constraints on the expansion of hospital facilities in Plateau State.

  2. To identify the challenges hospitals face in securing adequate funding for expansion in Plateau State.

  3. To propose strategies for overcoming funding constraints to improve hospital facilities in Plateau State.

Research questions

  1. How do funding constraints affect the expansion of hospital facilities in Plateau State?

  2. What are the challenges faced by healthcare institutions in Plateau State in securing adequate funding for hospital expansion?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome funding constraints and improve hospital facilities in Plateau State?

Research hypotheses

  1. Funding constraints significantly limit the expansion of hospital facilities in Plateau State.

  2. Insufficient government funding and reliance on external aid are the primary challenges preventing the expansion of hospital facilities in Plateau State.

  3. Implementing alternative funding strategies will significantly enhance the expansion of hospital facilities in Plateau State.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on healthcare institutions in Plateau State, analyzing the effects of funding constraints on hospital expansion. The research is limited to a select number of hospitals in the state, and the findings may not be representative of hospitals in other regions of Nigeria. Additionally, the study will primarily utilize qualitative data from interviews with hospital administrators and policymakers.

Definitions of terms

  • Funding Constraints: Limitations in the financial resources available to healthcare institutions, which hinder their ability to expand and improve services.

  • Hospital Expansion: The process of increasing the physical size, services, or capabilities of a healthcare facility to meet growing demand.

  • Infrastructure: The physical and organizational structures needed for the operation of healthcare services, including buildings, equipment, and technology.
